Explore racing disciplines
Speedway is our focus. Our database also covers related forms of motorcycle track racing. Here is how the disciplines differ.
Speedway
Speedway is raced on short oval tracks, usually with four riders starting together. A typical heat lasts four laps. The motorcycles use methanol fuel, have no brakes and are designed for controlled sliding through the corners.
What makes it special: explosive starts, close racing, and frequent heats in a compact stadium setting. Individual meetings, leagues and international championships use different scoring formats.
Longtrack & Grass Track
These related disciplines use longer oval circuits than conventional speedway. Events can take place on grass or sand/dirt surfaces, and races commonly feature more than four riders depending on the rules and event.
We group Longtrack and Grass Track together in the calendar because their racing concepts and machinery are closely related. The database can still retain the specific track surface and event classification separately.
Ice Speedway
Ice Speedway takes oval racing onto frozen surfaces. Motorcycles use tyres with long metal studs for grip, allowing high cornering speeds and a distinctive riding style. Safety and track preparation are particularly important.
Its technical setup and riding technique make it visibly different from conventional speedway.
Flat Track
Flat Track is a motorcycle racing discipline on unpaved oval circuits, with several classes and track lengths. Riders slide through turns, but motorcycle designs, race formats and regulations differ from traditional European speedway.
We list Flat Track separately so its events and results can be filtered without mixing them with Speedway or Longtrack.
Calendar discipline labels reflect available source and track data. Unknown or ambiguous classifications remain marked as unclassified until verified.
